Support Systems

As I explained in a recent post, I was denied admittance to my university’s Masters in English Language and Literature program. I was rather devastated to be honest, and I would be lying if I stated that I was totally past feeling disappointed, because I am not and likely will not be for a while.

That being said, I do feel as though I am handling the situation quite well. I am trying my best to focus on the future rather than what could have been, and I believe in doing so I have come to the realization that perhaps I was denied entrance to the program in order to pursue an alternate path that will be more beneficial to me than the latter option.

This experience has allowed me to acknowledge the tremendous importance of support systems in my own life. My family, friends and boyfriend have been of significant aid and assistance to me in terms of refraining from focusing on regret, and I cannot stress enough how important it is to have some sort of support system in your own life. Regardless of who or what said support is coming from, it is required in specific situations in order to progress and succeed, and I am confident in stating that my own support systems are undeniably strong.

If you are in a situation in which you feel as though you do not have access to a support system, consider exploring some other options. A support system does not necessarily have to be a designated person – it can be an activity or a hobby, or even a self-nurturing practice, for example meditation or exercise. The options and possibilities are endless and I urge you to determine what works best for you personally in order to have access to and make use of support.
