Cyber bullying is a topic we’re all familiar with. We’ve either been subjected to it ourselves, or we know someone else who has.

I find it somewhat surprising that despite the frequency of cyber bullying cases in today’s day and age, no one really seems to be addressing it. I realize it’s an incredibly complex issue and doesn’t consist of one single solution, however, I think more effort can be dedicated to attempting to control and eventually, hopefully, eradicate it.

One key component that comprises the complexity of the cyber bullying issue is that it can be done in a somewhat anonymous manner. Electronic devices allow perpetrators to hide behind screens and usernames to put others down, without acknowledging the incredibly severe consequences that could arise as a result of their actions.

One possible strategy for addressing cyber bullying is simply reporting it when it’s spotted. If social media users collectively came together to work towards diminishing the frequency of cyber bullying, we could really make a difference.

I find it difficult to comprehend someone’s reasoning for bullying another person online, and I doubt I will ever understand it. What purpose does it serve? What does a person get out of it? It is a vicious, relentless method of attack upon people who may or may not be significantly affected by its outcome, and it’s about time we make more of an effort to reduce its prevalence throughout the internet. Small-scale efforts from everyone who uses social media could be what sparks the beginning of a progressive means to stop cyber bullying from happening, and I know we are all more than capable of contributing to these efforts.

The next time you’re using social media and you see a hateful comment, report it. You may end up completely changing someone’s life in the process, and all you have to do is click a button.
