Have you seen Beautiful Boy?

I made mention of my love for Timothée Chalamet recently, and in researching this fine lad to write a post about him, I discovered a movie he appeared in called Beautiful Boy. I read up on the plot of this film and decided to give it a watch.

I am so, so glad I did.

Beautiful Boy “is a 2018 American biographical drama film directed by Felix van Groeningen, in his English-language feature debut,” says the movie’s Wikipedia page. “The screenplay, written by Luke Davies and van Groeningen, is based on the memoirs Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction by David Sheff and Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines by Nic Sheff.”

Starring Steve Carell as David Sheff, Chalamet as Nic, his son, Maura Tierney as David’s wife, and Amy Ryan as David’s ex-wife, this movie depicts the downward spiral of Nic as he begins using hard drugs and ultimately becomes addicted to crystal meth.

The timeline of the movie can get a bit confusing as it switches back and forth between past and present tense, however, it is by far one of the most emotionally profound movies I have seen in a while. The portrayal of Nic and how he as a person begins to change as he gets heavier and heavier into drugs is incredibly realistic (from my own understandings of addiction), but what I found to be so significant is the movie’s illustration of how drug addiction impacts the addicted person’s family. Chalamet’s acting is what allows this illustration to be so realistic, and his performance in this film is, in my opinion, positively outstanding, as is Carell’s.

If you know someone who has battled addiction, or if you have yourself, consider watching this movie. It helped me to better understand drug addiction, and I think anyone could benefit from seeing this movie.
