Don’t jump the gun with Ontario’s re-opening this week

If you’re a resident of Ontario, you’re likely aware that as of this past Tuesday, February 16, re-openings of non-essential businesses and other services were given the green light to open their doors once again to the public, abiding by COVID-19 protocols, depending where exactly you’re located in the province. Here in Brant County, we are in the orange zone according to Ontario’s coronavirus colour-coded framework, meaning society can somewhat get back to a relative normal with some stipulations in place.

I work part-time at a golf course, tending bar and operating the indoor golf simulators. Being someone who works in the service industry, I will be honest in saying that I am a little leery to see how customers will behave and treat employees now that more businesses have been permitted to open once again, and I imagine anyone else working in customer service is a little apprehensive to interact with the public this time around. We have been in lockdown since December 26th, so it is safe to say that a lot of us are chomping at the bit to get out and do some socializing.

I ask anyone reading this post to please be conscious of the ways in which we treat the people working for businesses as we navigate through this lockdown lift. Granted, we are all anxious to leave our homes and see some different scenery, but businesses that are open and operating must be vigilant in terms of abiding by the measures in place to slow the spread of COVID-19. These measures have the potential to increase wait times and slow productivity in a business, and this is no fault of the employee working; we are all trying to grapple with changes put in place to allow services to re-open, and losing it on someone because your coffee order took two minutes longer than normal is not going to benefit anyone or anything.

Please, do not jump the gun with this lockdown lift. Be patient, be kind, and be understanding. It has never been more important to show kindness to others.

  1. Hello. Unfortunately some people still believe the pandemic is a hoax and some young people tend to think they are invincible. I think businesses have to have strict regulations and if their clients or customers don’t comply they should be asked to leave. Maybe for your protection you should double mask. Toronto is still in lockdown but ae schools re opened this week. Hopefully they wont have to close again. Stay safe!
