Have you seen ‘A Perfect Storm’?

Perhaps a better-suited title for today’s post would be who hasn’t seen ‘A Perfect Storm’?, and I fully admit that it has taken me far longer than intended to get around to watching this movie. I had heard of it, and had furthermore heard it’s considered to be a classic in the opinions of some, prior to seeing it myself.

Netflix recently added ‘A Perfect Storm’, and because Blaine has already seen the movie several times and is a fan, we agreed to watch it together. To be honest, I think he was a bit disgusted I hadn’t seen it yet, but he hid his displeasure well.

For anyone who, like me, is a bit later getting around to seeing this movie, it tells the story of several gentlemen who are swordfish fishermen, if that is the proper terminology, and it is based on true events. I did try checking Google but wasn’t able to determine the actual title of this particular profession.

‘A Perfect Storm’ is a 2000 drama thriller film starring George Clooney as Captain Billy Tyne, Mark Wahlberg as Bobby, Diane Lane as Christina, Bobby’s girlfriend, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio as Linda, William Fichtner as Sully, John Hawkes as Bugsy, and John C. Reilly as Dale. The movie depicts the story of these fisherman and how their last few trips out to sea haven’t proven to be terribly affluent. The owner of the boat makes his displeasure with the crew’s catches known, and Captain Billy takes it upon himself to push him and his crew harder than ever before to bring home a decent haul.

I don’t want to ruin the film for anyone who hasn’t yet seen it and wants to, but the crew finds themselves in the midst of a catastrophic storm with a boat exploding with swordfish.

I did enjoy the movie, although it is emotional. It gives some good insight regarding concepts of greed and lack of appreciation.
