Looking for your next read? I’ve got you covered

I used to spend the majority of my free time reading when I was younger. I simply could not get enough of it; my passion for reading and literature was undeniably ignited by the Harry Potter series, seeing as I’ve read all seven books roughly six times each, and fantasy has always been one of my favourite genres to explore, whether it be literature or television/film.

Unfortunately, I really don’t read much anymore, up until recently. To be entirely transparent, I believe studying English in university turned me off from reading for quite a while; as a student, I was expected to read four to five novels each week based on course content, and because of the heavy load, reading became more of a requirement, or a chore, as opposed to formerly being something I engaged with for pleasure.

A little while ago, my mom and sister came home from Costco with a novel for me. Titled Powerless, it’s written by Lauren Roberts and is the first installment in her trilogy. It was published in 2023, and while it is possible I’m simply out of touch with what’s new and hot in the reading realm, I seriously can’t comprehend how more people aren’t reading, and absolutely loving, this novel.

I’m at a point in the text at which I’m struggling to put it down at times, and no, that is not an exaggeration. It’s the honest truth; Roberts’ novel is sort of a take on The Hunger Games and a corrupted, dystopian world, but arguably in Roberts’ own personal way. The protagonist, Paedyn, is a complete and utter badass, and she reminds me a bit of myself in some ways. I don’t want to spoil the plot for anyone who hasn’t yet read it and wishes to, but think Hunger Games combined with magic.

You need to get your hands on this book. You will not regret it.
