Hello, 30

As of last Thursday, I am officially a member of the 30 club. This is the year for those of us born in 1995 to embrace the dreaded yet inevitable invitation we are graced with to become members of the 30 club, and while I still don’t really know how to feel about being 30, I can say I had a nice birthday.

My husband’s birthday is four days before my own, so we always celebrate ours together. We are having a family dinner with my parents, sister and grandmother, and Blaine and I are also planning to go out, just the two of us, to enjoy a celebratory meal.

When I say I’m having some difficulty acknowledging I am 30, I’m not referencing the age itself. Being 30 is not old (although it is in the rugby community), but I honestly struggle to comprehend my age now begins with a 3 as opposed to a 2 because I certainly do not feel 30 – probably a good thing.

I remember when my sister turned 30 and thinking that was preposterous, yet here we are, and this time around, it’s me, the baby sister, turning 30. Time is absolutely flying, and it’s hard to believe it was over a decade ago that I graduated from high school.

I think perhaps my 30th birthday serves as a stark reminder to slow down a bit and appreciate everything I have in my life. It would arguably do a lot of us good to pause every now and then and remind ourselves of our accomplishments and feats throughout life, because it really is too easy to get caught up in the craziness of daily living and forget about where we come from. Life truly is short, so take the time to pause and reflect here and there, birthday or not – it’s a helpful practice.
