I’m currently in the process of re-watching one of my favourite shows, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, for the umpteenth time. I watched the episode a few nights ago, for anyone else who watches it, when Captain Holt loses his captaincy and is replaced by the lovely Captain Kim. Charles, desperate to reinvent his character and impress his new boss, decides to adopt a bad boy lifestyle as a result of receiving a leather jacket from none other than Rosa. Immediately upon donning the jacket, Charles manages to encapsulate a persona that completely opposes his natural one – he’s a chick magnet, and upon accidentally flirting with a married woman, he discovers, once confronted by the husband, that their marriage is suffering and he is desperate to fix it. The husband asks Charles what his secret is, and how he, too, can be cool, and Charles responds by handing the husband Rosa’s jacket, telling him that it is all he will need.
Charles is asked by Terry why he would give up such a sacred item, to which Charles replies, “Because it’s the right thing to do.” And he’s damn right.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine and its characters can be a little goofy at times, but in this particular moment, Charles is perfectly serious, as is the message his character is sending. I think it’s one that could benefit a lot of people in the current world we find ourselves living in.
These days, it seems as though doing the right things is more difficult and complex than ever before, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it regardless. Besides, anything worthwhile is worth fighting for, and simply because we cannot identify a blatant reason as to ‘why’ in the heat of the moment does not warrant not doing it anyway if our conscience is hinting for us to do so.
