A lot of the time, when people hear someone talk about their pets as though they are their children, they think they are insane. I am one of those insane people.
I have always loved animals, with the exception of sharks, because they’re just terrifying. Growing up, there was never a time when we didn’t have a pet dog, and just recently my mother has taken a liking for felines, meaning we have a few of those now, too.
My family and I have two Australian Blue Heeler dogs named Sam and Jake, and they are my boys. They have so much personality, and they never fail to put a smile on my face. Jake is black and grey, so he is more of a ‘blue’ heeler, whereas Sam is light brown, meaning he is a ‘red’ heeler. They are brothers from the same litter, and they are inseparable. They were little tyrants when they were puppies and destroyed half of my parents’ possessions, but they have definitely calmed down a lot. Jake is so lazy he has figured out how to tip over his food dish so he can eat while laying down. They are turning eight this summer, which is hard to believe considering I can still remember when we first brought them home. They are a lot of fun and they’re my poopies.
Last summer my dad’s friend gave us a cat to put out in the barn and catch mice. When we first got him, he was just a kitten, and we agreed to let him sleep in the house for the first couple of days. Needless to say, he still has not left the house, and he is the sassiest cat you will ever meet. I had the honour of naming him, so obviously I chose the name Lionel.
As for Gemma, our newest cat, my sister actually rescued her and took it upon herself to raise her. She has a come long way since my sister brought her home, and has gone from being malnourished and terrified to pleasantly plump and the centre of attention.
Her and Lionel don’t have the greatest relationship, considering Gemma is in love with Lionel and Lionel hates Gemma, but they’re working on it.
We also have four kittens out in the barn that were also rescue cats, but they are staying in the barn. I don’t think my mother can handle having to reupholster another leather couch. Their names are Maurice, Peaches, Milo and Otis, and they are all boys.
