I swear, just about every year I hear about an incident involving tourists defacing a historical monument. I would wager I’m not the only one who seems to hear about these things on an annual basis; it probably happens a hell of a lot more than I hear about.
My sister recently informed me that about a week ago, a tourist was caught on candid video carving his name along with his girlfriends into one of the Colosseum’s walls in Rome. A fellow visitor to the Colosseum caught the guy, apparently named Ivan, defacing the wall as his girlfriend stood and watched. He etched the phrase ‘Ivan + Hayley ’23.’
I don’t think I need to prove to anyone this guy is an absolute turnip, but in case anyone was wondering what sort of punishment one gets for defacing a historic monument, he could be facing a hefty fine along with jail time.
The Colosseum is 1900 years old. I’ve been there myself, and I cannot even fathom how much idiocy is required to be within the walls of such an incredulous structure and think to oneself, I should vandalize something here.
Determining how to go about adding my own personal touch to the Colosseum was the last fucking thing on my mind while visiting. I genuinely struggle to comprehend why anyone would ever think this is appropriate or acceptable. I watched the video, and the guy did this in broad daylight with countless other tourists walking by.
The man who filmed the incident did, at least, refer to the man as a stupid asshole.
The Colosseum, sadly, is not the only historic site to become victim to entitled, asshat tourists, and I do not understand why this happening continues to occur. If you can’t control yourself, sit on your hands like a damn child and stay the hell home.
