The power of lyrics

Everyone should have the pleasure of experiencing the absolute magic that occurs when a song lyric blesses your ears that you haven’t heard before. I’m not referring to any old song lyric, or basic ones for that matter; rather, I’m referring to lyrics that are the purest form of poetic beauty, encapsulating your soul and mind within its own words.

I’m a sucker for powerful writing, and song lyrics are no exception.

I try my best to make a mental note anytime I hear a song with lyrics that absolutely gobsmack me, and I thought I would share these very songs, and their associated lyrics, with all of you in hopes of encouraging you to do some lyric reflection yourself.

1) Silver Springs by Fleetwood Mac:

“Was I such a fool?
I’ll follow you down til’ the sound of my voice will haunt you
Give me just a chance
You’ll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you
Time cast a spell on you, but you won’t forget me
I know I could’ve loved you, but you would not let me
I’ll follow you down ’til the sound of my voice”

2) The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel:

“And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming

And the sign said, ‘The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence'”

3) Who Knew by P!nk:

“That last kiss, I’ll cherish until we meet again
And time makes it harder, I wish I could remember
But I keep your memory, you visit me in my sleep
My darling, who knew?”

4) Landslide by Fleetwood Mac:

“Well, I’ve been afraid of changin’
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I’m getting older too
Oh! I’m getting older too”

I could write ten posts on this topic.
