Are you washing your hair correctly?

I realize the title of today’s post might seem a bit condescending in the sense that washing one’s hair isn’t exactly a difficult concept. It requires hair, water, some shampoo and conditioner, and it would be fair to assume there really isn’t much more to it.

I recently watched a video posted to Instagram by Johnathan Van Ness, commonly known as JVN, that snagged my attention for good reason. JVN is a hair guru, and I first became familiar with him and his work via the television series he stars in titled Queer Eye. I follow his Instagram account because he is hilarious, but also because he posts useful information about hair and affiliated products. The reel he posted that piqued my interest is quite literally of him, in his shower, explaining how to properly wash hair.

If anyone else had posted this, I probably wouldn’t have watched it. But, because I love JVN, I decided to give it a view, and I am pleased I did. One thing I learned about how to properly shampoo hair from JVN is that shampoo is primarily intended for your scalp as opposed to the ends of your hair; you want to work your shampoo into a good lather all over your actual head, but you don’t want to rigorously wash the ends of your hair. Rather, when you rinse the shampoo out, as it passes through the ends of your hair, that’s about all the actual washing your ends require.

He also explains in the video that when you’re rinsing out your shampoo, you want to lift sections of hair off of your scalp to ensure you’re actually rinsing all of the product out.

Another trick I learned from JVN, but not exclusively from this video, is to comb your hair through in the shower while conditioner is still in it. This has saved me from so many unruly knots after getting out of the shower, and it has enabled me to be a lot gentler with my hair as opposed to going at it with a comb like a feral animal.

The more you know, my friends.
