Have you seen ‘Damsel’?

If you use Netflix, there is a strong probability you’ve heard of a recently released film titled Damsel. If you don’t use Netflix, there is still a strong chance you’ve heard something about this film because it seems to be all over social media at any given moment, based on what I’ve seen on my own channels.

Damsel stars Millie Bobby Brown as Elodie, a young princess who finds herself and her family facing an undesirable situation. The kingdom Elodie and her family reside in is in the North, meaning it is bitterly cold and barren, and their food shares are dwindling. Concerned for the sake of their people, Elodie’s father reaches out to different kingdoms in hopes of marrying Elodie off to create an affluent alliance with a wealthier kingdom; his efforts are successful, and soon, Elodie and her family find themselves travelling to the kingdom of Aurea to meet prince Henry, Elodie’s future husband.

Upon arrival, everything seems grand. Aurea is beautiful, Henry and his family are kind, and Elodie takes pride in knowing she is assisting her kingdom and her people through this new marriage alliance. Things are not as they seem, however, and Elodie soon finds herself in a very undesirable situation in which she must fight for her life in order to escape Aurea.

I don’t want to ruin the plot for anyone who hasn’t seen it and wishes to, so I will keep things as vague as I possibly can in terms of plot discussion.

The movie is a bit ridiculous in regard to setting and dramatics, but I believe it is supposed to be. The story plays on fairytale tropes but gives them a refreshing twist from a female perspective, and I found Millie to be wonderful as Princess Elodie.

I absolutely recommend watching this movie. It’s fun, it’s light, and it isn’t what you might expect.
