Are you prepared for an emergency?

After writing yesterday’s post discussing helpful knowledge we should all try and know, I realized that one sole post simply was not enough to do the topic justice. I started thinking about how sharing this information could quite literally save a life somewhere, someday, and this thought then prompted a question – just how many of us can confidently say we are prepared for an emergency, of any kind?

I realize it is a wee bit difficult to anticipate what specific sort of emergency we could experience in the future, but it’s arguably better to be over-prepared than under-prepared. In the context of keeping an emergency kit at home, check out what is recommended for said kit from nymag.com, which I have paraphrased:

  • A large, good-quality, durable backpack
  • A flashlight of some sort
  • A multi-purpose tool
  • A first-aid kit
  • A hand-crank radio
  • Matches
  • A power bank
  • Batteries
  • A sleeping bag, pillow and blanket(s)
  • Some kind of cleaning product, like a disinfectant
  • Non-perishable food, or food with a hefty shelf life
  • Water
  • Storage jugs for water
  • Some type of water sanitation device
  • A whistle
  • A mask or a respirator
  • A tent
  • A fire extinguisher
  • Plastic sheets or tarps
  • Duct tape
  • A map
  • Essential personal hygiene products
  • A shovel
  • Fuel

Granted, some of these items are easier to find, purchase and store than others, but depending on storage space and how many people are in your family, feel free to tailor this list and the quantities of items to whatever suits your personal situation best. I would personally be sure to include a knife of some sort, or another type of weapon.

Perhaps there are a few other items that could be added or removed from this emergency kit list, but again, to each their own; regardless of how intensely you wish to go about creating a survival/emergency kit, I figure these items are a good place to start.
