The dangers of non-verbal communication

I figure most of us have heard the expression ‘keyboard warrior,’ or something along those lines. If you haven’t, not to worry, as you’re likely already familiar with the concept, just unfamiliar with the terminology.

A keyboard warrior refers to someone who can seriously dish it out online. They are folks who tend to use their keyboard as a shield, in a sense; they figure that because they are conversing with someone online, and not in person, that they can be as nasty as they desire, and being a prick behind a computer screen is a lot different than being a prick in person.

I truly despise keyboard warriors, because in my mind, they’re no different than a coward. Too afraid to insult someone to their face, they instead resort to insulting them from the comfort of their living room, being blissfully unaware, in most cases, of what a piece of shit they really are.

I like to live by a few sayings, one being if you have nothing nice to say, simply say nothing, and another being if you wouldn’t say a remark to someone’s face, don’t say it to them through a screen of some sort.

I received an email from someone the other day that was rather rude, short, and arrogant, and it really pissed me off. This might sound ridiculous, but I would rather be ridiculed by someone face-to-face as opposed to being belittled through a mobile device, because I honestly find the latter to discern itself with an even further extent of embarrassment. I had a snarky draft in the archives, ready to go in response, but I stopped myself from sending it, because if I had, I would be no better than the original sender.

Just because you’re not berating someone to their face doesn’t mean it is less severe when it’s done online. If anything, it’s worse.
