I like to think I have a relatively broad taste in music, and I can thank my parents for this. Growing up, my parents exposed me and my sister to a wide range of musical genres; country, classic rock, Motown, and classical, to name a few.
My favourite genres now in my adult years are 90s-2000s country and classic rock, but I still listen to many different genres.
My mom absolutely loves disco music, so when she heard that a group called Disco Inferno was coming to the Sanderson Centre in Brantford, Ontario, to cover some classic songs from the disco era, she asked me if I would accompany her. The show was this past Saturday, and me and my mom had an absolute blast.
I wasn’t entirely sure if I would enjoy the show going into it, and I mostly agreed to go with my mom because I knew it would make her happy. I was pleasantly surprised, however, by how much I did enjoy the show, and furthermore, how many of the songs I was familiar with and currently enjoy.
Disco isn’t for everyone, and there are certain songs that fall into the disco categorization that I am not a fan of, but I think this ideology applies to every genre of music. For example, I love Garth Brooks, but I don’t love each and every song he released throughout his career.
My mom was in her element at this show. She and I danced the entire time in our seats, and I don’t think she stopped smiling until the following day. It was wonderful seeing her re-live her youth, and listening to her stories from the great times she had when she went to discos with friends back in the day.
I am so glad I went to this show with my mom, and I have a refreshed appreciation for disco music to boot.
