Waterford Pumpkinfest: a true community initiative

Most folks living in Brant and/or Norfolk County are familiar with Waterford Pumpkinfest. It’s been around for as long as I have, and when my sister and I were younger, our family would go each and every year to partake.

Pumpkinfest is a big deal for Waterford and the surrounding areas because, to my knowledge, it is one of the largest local community events in our neck of the woods. Homes that are located within the vicinity of Pumpkinfest go full out in terms of Halloween decor; you’re encouraged to carve your own pumpkin and bring it with you to place on the massive pumpkin tower on display; there are local vendors and businesses selling their inventory; the parade is always a hit; live music is present; there is a midway with rides; and a soapbox derby, among many more events I’m likely forgetting to mention.

I haven’t been to Pumpkinfest in many years, but this year, I attended to walk in the parade with my rugby team because we entered a float. I could not believe how many people came out to watch the parade, and seeing the enthusiasm from the crowd and children was honestly wonderful. The entire event was fantastic, and I cannot stress enough how much community involvement contributes to this festival and its success.

Check out the following blurb, describing Pumpkinfest, from its website: “Waterford Lions Pumpkinfest is a 100% volunteer-run community festival that celebrates our unique agricultural heritage and diversity. The festival is a multi-day family event with something for every generation. Live Music (all 3 days), a Huge Car Show, Soap Box Derby, Decorating Contests, Artist Marketplace, Fireworks, a parade, a spookhouse and so much more. The whole town is involved with events at the Legion, Waterford Heritage and Agriculture Museum as well as the Old Town Hall Stage. Our aim is to keep everyone engaged and entertained while sharing our cultural activities with not only our local community but out-of-town visitors as well. Friends from near and far are welcome!”

If you’ve never been to Waterford Pumpkinfest, consider this your sign to do so.
