I’ll begin this post by being transparent and stating that up until recently, the title of this post would arguably make anyone who knows me personally label me a hypocrite. The reasoning behind this is that while I was an avid reader when I was younger, I took a rather lengthy sabbatical and only began reading regularly again within the last few months.
Now that I’m back on the reading train, I don’t think I can still be called a hypocrite, but if you’re feeling particularly vicious today, feel free to consider me one.
I think I honestly preferred reading to watching television for the most part when I was a child, and there were instances in which it was a struggle to gain my attention if I was immersed in a text of some sort. I eventually acknowledged that my preferred genre to read is fantasy, but I also enjoy horror, thriller and mystery.
I know there are enough people who would rather do just about anything but read, but it truly is such a beneficial hobby to engage in. It’s a fantastic way to improve basic grammar, punctuation and spelling; it (obviously) is a great way to enhance reading skills; it tickles the imagination and encourages creating thinking; it’s relaxing and great for the brain.
My theory is that anyone who says they dislike reading simply hasn’t found their niche genre yet. I cannot comprehend how someone can obstinately choose to refrain from reading considering I find it such a magical experience courtesy of visualization, and while I’m not here to force anyone into anything, I do implore you to shift your mindset towards the idea of reading and perhaps do some digging to see if you can unearth something you enjoy.
Reading positively slaps, and nothing will change my mind.
