Any woman who plays the game of rugby can arguably relate to the inevitable struggle that seems to present itself when it comes to finding a hairstyle that holds up to the roughness and toughness of the game.
Depending on the length of your hair, trying to determine a hairstyle that will not only stay in place throughout tackling and scrums, but, furthermore, won’t fall out or in your face, is not so simple of a task. I’ve been playing the game long enough to understand this myself, and while I like to think I’ve come up with a few styles that won’t let me down, depending on how rough a match is, sometimes they don’t hold up, either.
But, generally speaking, I find braids work best for me, personally. Not simple braids, though; we’re talking as many braids as needed to ensure my hair is staying put.
To provide you with some context, my hair is long. It falls about halfway down my ass, and it gets tucked into my pants when I pull them up after using the bathroom, to provide you with a solid visual. When I played in high school, I always braided the hair around my face; I would start at the crown of my head, on either side of my part, and braid backwards and away from my face. I would then sweep these braids back into a ponytail, and while this style worked for a little while, after I was quite literally tackled to the ground by my ponytail and had an actual chunk of hair removed from my scalp, I knew I needed to try something else.
Last season, I braided the hair around my face and then braided those braids into one braid down the back of my head. It worked well for being in the scrum, but I always had hair coming out and getting in my face about halfway through the game. This year, I think I may be onto something; I’ve been doing double Dutch braids on either side of my part, then securing them at the back of my head right above the nape of my neck to create a braid-like ponytail.
