If you’re like me and tend to watch and rewatch the same shows and series repeatedly, you can arguably relate to the frustration that occurs when you realize you probably could go for something new to watch, yet have absolutely no clue where to begin.
I am obsessed with anything related to Vikings, Medieval times, and ancient history, and I had my eye on a title on Netflix called Marco Polo. I’m in a couple of Facebook groups affiliated with some of my favourite shows, for example, Vikings and The Last Kingdom, and I saw a few people recommending Marco Polo. I wasn’t entirely sure of what to expect, but I decided to watch an episode, and I am almost finished the first season.
Marco Polo tells the story of the famous explorer and his time spent in Kublai Khan’s court. I think the casting is excellent, with Lorenzo Richelmy playing Marco, Olivia Cheng playing Mei Lin, Zhu Zhu playing Kokachin, Remy Hii playing Prince Jingim, and Benedict Wong playing Kublai Khan. Initially, Marco is seen as an outsider, though in time his relationship with Kublai Khan deepens and develops, and he finds himself immersed in a foreign world.
I was a little surprised to see that this show was not renewed for another season after its second season. A lot of people were outraged that the show ended, and still are, based on what I have seen online, and this indicates that the show is well done, an observation I have made myself through watching it.
The plot is a little confusing at times, and there are scenes during which I wish more dialogue occurred to explain some things further. But, overall, I am enjoying it, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys the same shows I do.
