Where has accountability gone?

As of late, I often find myself feeling frustrated and irritated as a result of people refusing to take accountability for their actions. I’m not isolated in noticing this, either; it seems as though just about everyone I speak to about it is feeling the same way I am, and personally, I find this realization a wee bit concerning.

Personally, I find this lack of accountability most evident in workplaces. Never before in my life have I been joshed around by a variety of businesses to the extent I have in the past year or so, and it drives me positively mental that everyone seems more than happy to pass the blame onto the next person I’m connected with, only for the issue to remain unresolved. Not only is the mistake itself unacknowledged by whoever I speak to – it’s brushed off or aside, without anyone having to take responsibility for their actions.

I’m not sure if this refusal to accept accountability stems from overall, general laziness in the workplace, or if it is a matter of people becoming so desensitized to other people’s issues that they just don’t give a flying fuck about anything at all. I do suspect that lingering, adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are a perpetrator in the accountability equation, because we were told to worry about and do whatever was necessary to ‘protect’ ourselves. Have we become so self-absorbed that we quite literally only care about ourselves, and not how our actions, words and behaviours affect others?

I’m not sure what the solution to this problem is, but I do think it will only continue to worsen. If we aren’t held accountable in any facet of life, whether it be in the workplace, with family or otherwise, doesn’t it make sense to hypothesize that eventually, we will be so self-absorbed that we become raging assholes?
