I figured since I have already blogged about both my skincare routine and my haircare routine, it would only make sense to dedicate a blog to the makeup products I am currently using and enjoying.
Let me just begin by saying how prior to last year, I had never even heard of Sephora or luxury makeup brands like Urban Decay and NARS. If you haven’t heard of these yet either, keep it that way. Sephora and its contents are a dangerous thing for your wallet.
When I first started getting interested in makeup, I was obsessed with higher end products, and not knowing any better, I assumed luxury brands were by far the best in terms of makeup products. Thankfully, over time, I have learned that there a lot of products at the drugstore that are just as good, if not better, than a lot of luxury makeup products. Drugstore makeup is also definitely cheaper, so if you’re like me and it feels like you’ve received a swift punch to the gut every time you walk up to the cashier at Sephora, your local drugstore is the place to go for good makeup finds and deals.
To prime my face, I use the COVER FX Mattifying Primer with Anti-Acne Treatment. This product is available at Shoppers Drug Mart as well as Sephora, so it’s the best of both worlds. It costs around $40.00 for one ounce, which, yes, is a lot, but primer is not something you want to cheap out on, because it acts as a barrier and protects your skin from all the makeup you put on top of it. So, if you’re going to splurge on a product, ensure it’s good quality and splurge on your primer.
For foundation, I have been using the L’Oreal Infallible Pro Matte Oil-Free Foundation. I absolutely love this foundation. It keeps my face matte all day long (usually), has medium but build able coverage, and is oil-free. Plus, it costs $13.00. What’s not to like? I like to combine shades 101 and 102 for a perfect match for my skin tone in the Winter months.
For concealer, I use the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Treatment Concealer. It has a yellow undertone, which is great for hiding dark under-eye circles and for colour correcting blemishes, and costs $11.00.
To apply my foundation and concealer, I use the knock-off version of a beauty blender sponge, which I get from Shoppers Drugmart. It’s around $6.00.
To fill in my eyebrows, I use the L’Oreal Brow Stylist Definer in the shade blonde/light. It costs $10.00, and it is a total dupe for the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz, which costs around $30.00! After I fill my brows in and give them some shape, I use my Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow Volumizing Fiber Gel in the colour light/medium. It is available at both Shoppers Drugmart and Sephora for $25.00, but as soon as I run out of this product I will be trying the L’Oreal Brow Plumper Gel, which I have heard is fantastic (and cheaper).
For mascara, I use the L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara in the shade black, and it costs $10.00. It gives great length and volume to both my top and bottom lashes, and does not flake or smudge throughout the day. It’s a winner for me.
For powder, I use the L’Oreal Infallible Pro Matte 16HR Powder in the shade porcelain. It costs $13.99, and while I wouldn’t say it keeps my face totally matte for 16 hours, it does a pretty good job for keeping me matte for most of my day.
For my blush, contour and highlight, I use the newly released Maybelline FaceStudio Master Contour in the shade light/medium. It costs $13.00, and is a great kit for anyone who is new to contouring and highlighting their face. The brush included in the palette sucks, though, so I highly recommend purchasing either a contouring brush or a multi-purpose brush to apply the products, which is what I use. I got mine from Sephora.
That just about covers it all! What are your favourite makeup and beauty products? Comment below to share with me.
