Have you seen ‘Ma’?

Blaine and I, a few evenings ago, decided to watch a movie titled Ma via Netflix. We had been contemplating watching it for a few days, so we decided to give it a shot and see whether or not our suspicion was warranted.

I am sad to report it was not.

Ma “is a 2019 American psychological horror film produced, co-written and directed by Tate Taylor. It stars Octavia SpencerJuliette LewisDiana SilversCorey Fogelmanis, and Luke Evans, and follows a group of teenagers who befriend a lonely middle-aged woman. She lets them party in her basement, and they end up being terrorized by her.[2] The film was produced by Jason Blum through his Blumhouse Productions company, along with Tate Taylor and John Norris,” says the film’s Wikipedia page.

I’ll be blunt and say that the plot of this horror flick is arguably one of the stupidest ones I’ve seen yet. Neither Blaine or I could wrap our minds around the prospect of willingly going to a random, middle-aged woman’s house to party and drink, and without sounding like a tremendous bitch, I’d say the teenage characters in this movie deserved what they got as a result of their antics.

This movie is pretty demented in terms of Octavia Spencer’s motives for what she ends up doing to the kids who use her basement as a frat pad. I believe the reasoning for Spencer’s disturbing motives are possibly detrimental in terms of what they may suggest to viewers, as Spencer, who plays Ma, decides to launch an assault on these teenagers as a result of what their parents did to her when they were in high school together. The plot takes revenge and uses it as a means to reciprocate bullying, however I believe the message behind this movie is dangerous in regards to what it portrays.

I do not recommend this movie. Do yourself a favour and simply refrain from viewing it.
