What are your go-to scary movies?

After writing a post about a similar topic the other day, I thought it might be useful for me to delve into detail regarding the films I listed as some of my all-time favourite horror movies. I can’t remember just how many I listed, but there were quite a few, and for the sake of time and your attention span, I’ll be focusing on the top ones I named from that post.

I realized that while it’s one thing to provide a list of scary movies, it’s another to provide some justification as to why I say they’re my favourite. So, buckle up, my friends.

Hereditary (2018)

  • Simply put, this film checks every single horror movie box. It contains jump scares, a truly unsettling build of suspense, gore, sinister elements and more. The cast is spectacular, with Toni Collette being nothing short of phenomenal, and this one stayed with me long after I finished watching it. I have watched it twice to date, and I should be good to go without watching it for the next few years, if I’m being honest. There is a particular scene with a piano wire that was a little too much for me.

The Conjuring (2013)

  • For me, The Conjuring is arguably the best horror movie I have seen to date. It’s a terrifying masterpiece that truly scared me, and believe me when I say it takes quite a bit to get me spooked.

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

  • If I had to name a movie that has scared me more than any other, it would be this one. This film is horror movie gold in terms of how it is filmed; the entire movie consists of footage shot from a shitty video camera, and despite the fact that not once is the terrifying protagonist shown, it is absolutely terrifying.

Bone Tomahawk (2015)

  • This one is arguably one of the most unsettling movies I have seen, and allow me to stress that it is not appropriate for the faint of heart. I’ve never abandoned a movie partway through, but I just about did watching this one. It’s about a group of people who wander off into a mountain range occupied by cannibals, so I’ll let your imagination run with that.
