Fiction has been my preferred writing style my entire life. Whether I myself am writing a piece, or if I am reading the work of another, fictional writing is my shit, and while I do appreciate non-fiction, when it comes to my own personal reading and writing tendencies, fiction is the way to go.
A lot of people are surprised when I tell them I prefer fiction over non-fiction in the reading and writing realm, and I’m not entirely sure why. I like to think their surprise is a reaction to my own exuded intelligence and/or intelligence, although in reality it probably has absolutely nothing to do with either, but I prefer that narrative in my own mind.
The main reason I prefer fiction to non-fiction in terms of the books I read is because of the creative opportunity you’re able to immerse yourself in, and furthermore, explore. Consider it this way; if you’re reading non-fiction, you’re arguably already aware of this and therefore will refrain from allowing your imagination to go wild to forbear from muddling the reality of what it is you’re reading. If you’re reading fiction, however, you’re mindful of the fact that what you are reading is not true and are therefore able to allow your imagination to roam free and formulate details of the story your eyes are taking in in a subjective manner.
My favourite component of the entire reading process is visualizing the words you’re reading and allowing an image or scene to formulate in your mind. It’s like a temporary escape from our world into the world of the characters you’re reading about, and few things trump this in regard to imaginary creativity. That isn’t to say you can’t visualize non-fiction – you absolutely can, but I am inclined to say your creative freedom is a bit more limited.
