Quite a few years back now, I remember reading a story via Daily Mail discussing a seriously complex murder investigation that was unfolding in South Carolina. Perhaps the case caught my eye because I have family in South Carolina; regardless of the reason why I started minimally following this story, I certainly was not anticipating the series that would spawn from it years later.
Blaine and I started watching a Netflix documentary called Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal recently, and we are hooked. To be fair, Blaine initially started watching this on his own, but once I saw a few minutes of an episode, I was intrigued, and we have been watching it together ever since. When I sat down to watch a full episode with Blaine, I was shocked to remember that the murder investigation being depicted in this documentary series is the same one I read about years back on Daily Mail.
I won’t go into detail too thoroughly regarding plot in case anyone wishes to watch it that hasn’t yet seen it, but essentially, the series begins by covering events of a boat crash that took place in 2019. The driver of the boat, Paul Murdaugh was severely intoxicated; he crashed the boat, and he and several of his friends were seriously injured. Mallory Beach, one of the passengers, was killed, and her death led to the downfall of the Murdaugh family empire in South Carolina.
I did not anticipate becoming so enthralled with this investigation, but Blaine and I both are, and for different reasons; I cannot stress the number of plot twists that are riddled throughout the Murdaugh family murder investigation and timelines, as well as the numerous skeletons hidden in the Murdaugh closet. This story is absolutely wild, heartbreaking, angering and terrifying – if you’re a fan of true crime, I absolutely recommend it.
