As much as I enjoy watching series and movies dealing with significantly heavy subject matter, I do like to spice things up and throw a dash of comedy in here and there. Currently, I’m rewatching Vikings (shocking, I know), and I recently started Peaky Blinders which I am thoroughly enjoying thus far.
If you’re familiar with either of these shows, you’re aware of the fact that they depict a shit ton of violence, so not exactly light and airy television.
I recently wrapped up rewatching Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which, if you haven’t seen, I absolutely recommend; I was searching for another comedy series to tune into and came across a show on Netflix titled Derry Girls. My sister had mentioned it to me before and said it was hilarious, so I decided to give the first couple of episodes a go.
I’m now almost in the third and final season.
Derry Girls tells the story of a group of teenage friends and their daily lives living in Northern Ireland in the 1990s and attending an all-girls Catholic school. Erin Quinn, played by Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Orla McCool, played by Louisa Harland, Michelle Mallon, played by Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, Clare Devlin, played by Nicola Coughlan, and James Maguire, played by Dylan Llewellyn, are the group of friends in question, and their dynamic is positively hysterical. Sister Michael, played by Siobhán McSweeney, is an additional fantastic character, and her one-liners in themselves are more than enough reason to tune into the show – she is a nun, but an absolutely savage all the while.
Orla’s character is probably my favourite overall because she is purely nutty, and I feel like I relate to her nuttiness.
I was saddened to discover there are only three seasons of this show, because that’s how damn funny it is. I highly recommend giving it a watch.
