Finding poetry in song

I know for certain I’ve covered this topic in at least one post so far, but given the vastness of song lyrics, and additionally, all songs in existence, I think the conversation pertaining to truly stunning lyrics that double as poetry deserves more than one post.

I’m a sucker for anything well-written, and lyrics are no exception. When I hear a line in a song that resonates with me because of its poetic beauty, it isn’t easily forgotten, and I’ve built up a mental list of these such songs over the years that I would be more than happy to share with you.

  • ‘Make you Feel my Love’ by Adele
  • “When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love”
  • ‘Vincent’ by Don McLean
  • “Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer’s day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul”
  • “Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
How you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
    Perhaps they’ll listen now”
  • ‘One and Only’ by Adele
  • “I dare you to let me be your, your one and only
    I promise I’m worthy
    To hold in your arms
So come on and give me the chance
To prove I am the one who can walk that mile
    Until the end starts”
  • ‘Chasing Cars’ by Snow Patrol
  • “If I lay here / If I just lay here / Would you lie with me and just forget the world? Forget what we’re told / Before we get too old / Show me a garden that’s bursting into life”
  • ‘Run’ by Snow Patrol
  • “Light up, light up / As if you have a choice / Even if you cannot hear my voice / I’ll be right beside you dear / Louder, louder / And we’ll run for our lives / I can hardly speak I understand / Why you can’t raise your voice to say”

A moment of appreciation, please and thank you.
