Ahhhh, motivation. ‘Tis a fickle thing, for many people, and for others, it’s almost considered human instinct.
I’ve come to the realization over the years that people are typically on either extreme end of the motivation spectrum; they’re either tremendously lacking motivation, or, they’re so motivated that they border on becoming obsessive toward something.
There is a healthy middle ground when it comes to motivation, and while I am no expert on the matter, I thought I could share some of my own personal advice and what I tend to do in order to stay committed to something.
To be entirely candid, I think one of the best ways to stay motivated toward something is consistency which morphs into eventual habit. Whenever we begin something new, our interest in this new concept tends to wear off a couple of weeks in – exercise is a great example, especially given the start of a new year and individuals creating new year resolutions.
I have an at-home workout I do every day, and I’ve been doing it daily for, believe me or not, about ten years now. There are days I would rather do anything but my workout, trust me, but because I’ve been doing it for as long as I have, it has become a habit, and one I adhere to strictly. On days I really don’t want to do it, I remind myself of how fortunate I am to be able to exercise every day, and this small shift in perspective is enough to motivate me to complete the task at hand.
I also live by the saying ‘use it or lose it.’ This is another effective tactic that helps me to remain motivated toward something, and it’s easy to remember, so it’s a win-win.
Motivation can be tricky, but it doesn’t need to be impossible. And when your day gets the best of you, know that you have options to make things easier.
