Here’s how to style long hair in the heat

I like to consider having long hair as both a blessing and a curse, and I would wager anyone who possesses long hair would agree with me on this. Yes, long, flowy hair is beautiful, and having long hair usually means you’re afforded more opportunities when it comes to styling it. But, having long hair also means knots, no matter how hard you try to avoid them, and when it comes to being in extreme heat, long hair is not exactly your best friend.

My hair is past my ass, and I’m often asked how I style it when I work on the farm. Usually, it’s in a bun on the top of my head, but sometimes I do braid it and wear a ballcap, depending on whatever job I might be doing and how hot it is outside.

I also play rugby, and the last thing a rugby player needs when they’re on the pitch is pesky hair getting in their face and eyes. When I have games, I do two Dutch braids along my hair, on either side of my part, which I then braid into a third and larger Dutch braid with the remaining loose hair down the back of my head. I figure if it can hold up in a rugby game while being in the scrum, it’s pretty reliable.

Another style I tend to rely on when the temperatures outside are scorching is a Dutch braid down the back, which I then twist and pull back up alongside the back of my head. I secure the braid with a claw clip, and it actually looks quite nice – you could certainly fool people into thinking the style took you far longer than it really did.

My desperation style is definitely a bun on the top of my head, but I try not to resort to this one too much.
