For anyone unfamiliar with Hoizer, don’t stress. I will admit I pity you if you haven’t heard of this incredible musician, but no hard feelings or anything of the sort.
Referencing his Wikipedia page, Mr. Andrew John Hozier-Byrne (hence his stage name) is a singer, songwriter, and musician of Irish descent who hails from Newcastle. He’s 34 years of age and has already made quite a name for himself in the music world. His sound has been categorized as blues, soul, folk, rock and R&B, and he often expresses his religious and/or political views through his songs.
I knew of Hozier’s music, but for the longest time, the one and only song by him I was familiar with is Take Me to Church. From what I read on his Wikipedia page, this song is what put him on the map, so to speak, and ever since, he’s been releasing phenomenal music.
I would wager that Hozier’s music is not for everyone in the sense that it is unique. His music is unlike anything I’ve heard before, normally speaking, and he certainly has his own sound and style.
The biggest reason I am a fan of Hozier and his music is because his songwriting abilities are mind-blowing. The man literally sings poetry, and allow me to provide you with an example with this snippet from his song Work Song:
“When my time comes around, lay me gently in the cold dark Earth. No grave to hold my body down, I crawl home to her.”
Here’s an excerpt from his song Too Sweet:
“But no one wants to live forever, babe. You treat your mouth as if it’s Heaven’s Gate, the rest of you like you’re the TSA. I wish I could go along, babe, don’t get me wrong. You know you’re bright as the morning, as soft as the rain, pretty as a vine, as sweet as a grape. If you can sit in a barrel, maybe I’ll wait. Until that day, I’d rather take my whisky neat, my coffee black and my bed at three.”
If you haven’t heard Hozier’s music, this is your sign to check him out.
