‘This is the Zodiac Speaking’: A chilling take on one of America’s most notorious serial killers

I’ve read on more than one occasion that people who are able to relax while watching true crime productions are more than likely not terribly well mentally. Seeing as my husband and I both find watching true crime documentaries relaxing, I suppose if things do go south, at least we will be in the thick of it together.

I think perhaps because I find true crime footage so enthralling is the reason I am able to relax while watching it. But, I will say there are certain shows I have had to turn off prior to going to bed because they were a little too dark.

Blaine and I recently finished This is the Zodiac Speaking via Netflix, and I found it to be excellent. If you keep up with true crime to any extent, you’ve likely heard of the Zodiac Killer who made his presence known between the 50s and 60s in San Francisco. He was never caught, although he was risky in the sense that while he never left any sort of clues or evidence behind at his crime scenes, he did write to several large-scale newspaper outlets during his killing spree. In his letters to the editor he wrote creepy, unsettling messages with details pertaining to the murder cases only the killer would know, and furthermore, often wrote in code using ciphers that were usually unable to be deciphered.

All these years later, this documentary unveils a family who grew up with a certain individual that they now have come to realize was likely the Zodiac Killer.

The documentary is fascinating and intriguing, and keeps viewers on their toes right up to the very end. It is a three-episode series that we finished over the span of a few days, and I highly recommend it if you enjoy true crime.
