How much do you know about pigs? (part one)

I have to share a personal little tale with all of you before we delve into the subject matter of all things pigs.

I had just started on a draft of this post and left my laptop open with my blog page on the screen. All I had written was the title, which reads “How much do you know about pigs?”; I walked away from my computer for a little bit, and when I returned, I noticed my title had been altered slightly. My husband, Blaine, added an extension to the title which read “I eat them.”

It made me laugh.

Anyways, Blaine did suggest pigs for today’s post, so here we are.

I had an absolute obsession with pigs when I was a child, and if you don’t believe me, feel free to ask my family. My entire bedroom was a pig shrine, complete with a winged pig that was hooked up to the ceiling to fly.

I’m not sure what you plan to do with that information, but that’s my childhood in a nutshell.

I still love pigs, but sadly, my current bedroom is not adorned with swine accents. But, because they’re great, I thought I would dedicate a post to them, and this information comes from spca.bc.ca.

“1.   Pigs don’t sweat

Sweat like a pig? While this is a common phrase, it is not accurate! Pigs do not have sweat glands, meaning they are unable to sweat. Instead, to cool themselves down, pigs enjoy wallowing in mud.

“2.   Pigs are very clean animals

Dirty as a pigsty? Pigs being dirty animals is another common misconception. When given proper space, pigs will not soil the areas where they sleep or eat. This misconception comes (from) their habit of wallowing in mud to keep themselves cool.

“3.   Pigs are smarter than dogs

Pigs are incredibly smart animals, and their high level of intelligence consistently ranks them as one of the smartest animals in the world. Research into their high cognitive ability shows that they can play complex games, use tools, recognize their own name, and learn basic commands and tricks,” the web page explains.

Check back tomorrow for more information about pigs.
