I’ve never really been one to consider myself an artistic person. Growing up, my parents were generous enough to enroll me in piano lessons, which I pursued for roughly six or seven years until I started to lose interest, and my sister and I were both involved in Hungarian dance (my sister still is to this day). Aside from some musical and dance exposure, I’ve never really seen myself as artistic, but in my adult years, I’ve come to notice that I think I am, in fact, a relatively artistic person.
For starters, I am a writer, and while my publishing career could certainly stand to expand, writing is a form of creative expression. A few years ago, my husband, Blaine, bought me a guitar because I expressed interest in learning how to play it. My patience wore off rather quickly, but I did learn a few chords, and music has tremendous significance in my life, which is another form of artistic expression.
I’ve always been a decent drawer, but I actually began to dabble in painting in the past few years. When I say painting, I mean I’m using a paint-by-number kit, but I think it counts for something. I don’t really draw, but I did end up receiving a colouring page from a local business for a contest they were holding, and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying picking away at it and filling it in here and there.
I’ve also always enjoyed photography, something I think I inherited from my dad. I’ve captured some true beauties over the years, and I did participate in a photography course at one point.
I suspect a lot of people are like me in the sense they do not see themselves as artistic when in reality they are. Perhaps a lot of us associate creativity with specific forms of art, like sketching or painting, but art is a blanket term for all sorts of creative avenues. I would wager you’re far more creative than you think, and I encourage you to think about it and see just how many personal examples you can come up with.
