Have you seen “Bullitt”?

Yesterday’s post discussing The Westdale Theatre in Hamilton, Ontario, serves as a more than adequate segue to introduce today’s post; my parents and I went to the Westdale to see Bullitt because my dad is a fan, and today, we will be talking about the movie in question.

I had never heard of this film prior to my mom telling me about it, but if you were to ask a Baby Boomer, they would arguably tell you it is a popular movie. My mom, like me, had not seen it, but she was familiar with a rather famous car chase scene that takes place in the film.

Bullitt is a 1968 film that tells the tale of a particular case detective Bullitt is working, with Steve McQueen playing the main character of Bullitt. His love interest, Cathy, is played by Jacqueline Bisset.

Without sounding like an ignorant twit, I really didn’t know what to expect from this film. I was aware it was old, and sort of figured it might be a little boring, but I was mistaken; this film actually won an Oscar for Best Film Editing, according to Google, and I was seriously impressed with many of the camera angles used to film this movie.

The car chase scene deserves to be as famous as it is, because McQueen is actually driving the Mustang himself, not a stunt double. I was sweating while watching it because it is so hairy, let alone actually being in one of those cars, launching over the hills of San Francisco.

My mom had a bit of trouble following the plot, and save for one or two questions I needed my dad to clarify afterwards, I really did enjoy it. I would watch it again, and if you haven’t seen it yourself, perhaps consider this a sign to do so.
