Don’t fear the barbecue

As much as most people love consuming barbecued food, I have come to realize that many people do not enjoy the actual task of barbecuing. I don’t think it’s a matter of not wanting to do the actual task of grilling, but rather, a fear of the barbecue itself.

I should add that a lot of people have anxiety when it comes to cooking meat. From my understanding of this fear, it stems from the notion of not properly cooking meat thoroughly and potentially causing oneself or others to become sick. It isn’t an irrational fear by any means, but meat thermometers can help to calm a lot of the anxiety people encounter with raw meat.

As for what drives the fear of the actual barbecue, I think it also stems from people being wary of not knowing how to cook something on a barbecue in general, and, furthermore, not knowing when meat is cooked through.

I am very blessed in the sense that my dad has taught me everything I know about grilling, barbecuing, smoking, etc. He had me by his side, supervising whatever it was he was cooking when I was a little girl, and I am certain this exposure and his teachings are not only why I have no issue with the concept of barbecuing, but additionally, why I know a thing or two about meats and how to best cook and prepare them on an open flame.

If barbecuing is the last thing on the planet you want to do, I’m not trying to suggest you need to force yourself to overcome your fear and master the flame. But, I suspect many people assume barbecuing is a lot more complicated than it actually is, and so long as you have the right tools, knowledge, and equipment, you’ll be just fine.
