Does oil pulling actually work? Yes, it does

Quite a while ago now, I wrote a post about oil pulling. If you aren’t familiar with the practice, feel free to read that post, which I tagged. But, in essence, it involves putting coconut oil in your mouth for about 20 minutes daily, with the oil ‘pulling’ out toxins, bacteria, staining, etc.

In retrospect, I wish I had taken a photo of my teeth before I started oil pulling. The reason I didn’t is because I was not happy with how my teeth looked and was feeling rather self-conscious about them; they had a lot of staining between and near my gums on both my upper and lower teeth, and it got to a point that for the first time in my life I was reluctant to smile.

I heard about oil pulling from a friend and figured it was worth trying, and I am so grateful I did. I have absolutely seen a difference in my teeth, as have my family and my husband. Are my teeth blindingly white? No. But, the staining has diminished significantly, and I no longer feel embarrassed about smiling.

I think I’ve been regularly oil pulling for about three months now, and while it is a bit gross when you first try it out, you quickly adjust and get used to the sensation of a massive glob of oil in your mouth. It’s become a part of my daily routine, and I try to do it when I’m at home doing some chores, since I can’t speak to anyone while I’m doing it.

Some people who oil pull don’t brush their teeth, but I do both. Normally, I brush my teeth right after I’ve oil-pulled because I don’t necessarily love the greasy sensation in my mouth. I plan to continue with the practice to see just how much of a difference it can make.
