What’s your mantra?

I’ve never really been someone who engages with meditation and/or mantras, but that does not mean that I don’t respect and have an interest in both. Despite what society has conditioned us to believe, just because you don’t particularly like or find allure in something someone else does not automatically equate to writing the thing in question off entirely.

I’ve tried meditating a handful of times, and every time I attempt, I have a hell of a time turning off my whirling ADHD brain.

For anyone unfamiliar with the term, a mantra is a phrase or a word that is repeated out loud, several times throughout a day, usually, as a form of meditation. A mantra can be quite literally whatever you like it to be, but generally speaking, they’re not terribly lengthy for the sake of memorization, I imagine.

The idea behind a mantra is that the more you repeat it, the more you begin to believe it yourself, until it ultimately becomes a personal truth you no longer question. Some consist of one word while others consist of multiple; the beauty in a mantra is that you’re able to create and tailor one to suit you specifically.

As an example, say you’re someone who has always struggled to feel seen or appreciated, and as a result, you have manipulated yourself into thinking this is the truth. In this context, a fitting mantra might be something along the lines of “I am worthy of love,” and the more you practice and manifest this mantra, the truer it becomes.

While I’ve never made use of one, I imagine mantras can be rather powerful tools for people who regularly practice them. If you have ever considered creating one of your own, perhaps take this as a sign to develop one and try putting it into practice to see if you notice any changes.
