In case you’re unaware and don’t follow the game of rugby too closely, the Women’s Rugby World Cup is currently underway, and it has been exciting to say the least. The best of the best are participating in this tournament, playing the best game in sports, in my own humble opinion.
This past Friday, the Canadian women’s team won the semi-final match against the New Zealand Black Ferns, and it is a massive fucking win. Canada is now going to the finals, and I positively cannot wait to watch and cheer our women on from home.
This tournament, and this recent win from Canada, are astronomical in terms of what the future of women’s rugby looks like globally, but especially here in Canada. Canada is known for one sport and one sport only – hockey. So it’s about damn time another sport started earning some much-deserved recognition, and furthermore, that it’s female athletes making headlines for a change.
There is almost no funding for women’s rugby in Canada at the national level, so it is my sincerest hope that more people will pay attention to this sport, and our incredible team, to improve the industry for all players here forward. We need more interest in this sport, and more people playing it – this win from Canada will absolutely help to make these needs happen.
I don’t think I can adequately put into words the joy this game brings me, and having Canada moving onto the finals of the World Cup is only fueling the fire even further. This is tremendous for Canada, for women, and for rugby players all over the world, watching the dreams of these women being made in real time.
Do yourself a favour and tune into the final, whether you know rugby or not. I promise you will be entertained.
