I’ve been using Spotify for a few years now, and I’m quite liking it for the most part. I can’t say I appreciate how their prices continue to increase annually, but that’s everything, it seems, and I’m also not a huge fan of their limited audiobook access (you get so many hours of listening each month). Aside from these two blips, though, it’s pretty good, and the selection is endless.
A few months ago, I noticed what appeared to be a new feature on the app – it was an AI DJ, and to be honest, I didn’t give it a whole lot of thought and proceeded to listen to the playlists I’ve made myself, as I usually do. A few days ago, though, I saw an Instagram Reel of a gentleman detailing a rather hilarious experience he had with the Spotify DJ, and because this video reminded me that this feature exists, I decided to give it a go when I was on the lawnmower for a few hours.
The DJ is AI, and it is a man’s voice. He talks to you and will occasionally provide you with some context about a particular song, for example, how old it is or a neat fact about the singer or musician, and it tends to work in sections, if you will. The DJ will play a few songs from your “On Repeat” playlist; next, he might throw in some of your favourite songs from the past year, or the year prior; he will also throw in some new music that he picks based on the music you’re already listening to. For example, if you listen to a lot of Morgan Wallen, he might offer a few songs from artists with a similar sound, and perhaps even some Morgan Wallen songs you’re unfamiliar with.
The Spotify AI DJ is a pretty cool feature, and it’s essentially a jazzed-up version of your own music history. If you use Spotify, try it out and if you like it.
