In the context of dogs, it seems as though the majority of individuals, when looking to find a dog to join their family, tend to gravitate toward breeders as opposed to adoption or rescue facilities. To be honest, I completely understand why; when you purchase a dog when it is a puppy, you’re able to forge a bond with them at a very young age, and, furthermore, you’re able to begin training them as soon as you see fit in an attempt to discourage any unwanted behaviours or mannerisms.
I suppose it is possible to find a puppy in a rescue or adoption facility, but I think the probability is rather low, if I had to guess. Hence, the majority of people buy dogs instead of adopting them or even fostering.
When Blaine and I made the decision we wanted to have a dog of our own, I immediately started looking at local adoptions and rescue centres to see who was available, which is how we found our beloved Lenny. She is a rescue and is originally from North Carolina, and while we weren’t able to learn much of anything about her past, we are confident she experienced abuse because of some of the things we have seen.
When we got Lenny, she was almost a year old. We were well aware of the fact that she would need some extra attention, love and training, because we don’t know if she received any before we got her, and she proved us right in our suspicions not too long after bringing her home. But seeing Lenny acknowledge she is finally with people who love her and where she knows she is safe is worth absolutely every slip-up she has had.
Please consider adopting instead of shopping if you’re looking for a pet. Rescue animals are so deserving.
