Which fictional character deaths hit you the hardest?

As ridiculous as it sounds, the death of a fictional character can be rather upsetting. The reason I say some people might perceive this reaction as ridiculous is that the character in question is not at all real, and if you aren’t someone who attaches themselves emotionally to these sorts of characters, I suppose your reasoning stands. But I’ve been hit harder than hell by the passing of some fictional characters from a variety of sources, and there are a handful that will stay with me forever because they moved me that much.

I would quickly like to add that the bond people make with fictional characters is a testament to their creation and the skill of their creator, whether they exist in a book, a show, a film, etc.

Warning: there may be movie, television and book spoilers ahead.

I haven’t exactly hidden my love for Harry Potter here on my blog, and I can recall reading Hedwig’s death and being positively inconsolable. I could not believe J.K. Rowling would do her fandom so dirty, and I’m still not over Hedwig to this day.

If you’re a fan of Sons of Anarchy, I think you would agree with me when I say there are several character deaths I could go with here. Opie’s death was horrific, as was Tara’s, and as much as I appreciate both of their individual characters, the reason these deaths were so gutting was because of Jax’s reaction to both.

The death of the Suriel in Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Wings and Ruin was heartbreaking, but also rather beautiful thanks to Feyre.

The Walking Dead is another series that fans could arguably choose from a wide selection of character deaths, with many of them being brutal, but Glenn’s will always be number one for me.

Sam Courtland’s death from Sarah J. Maas’s Assassin’s Blade broke me, as did Liam’s in Fourth Wing.

What are some fictional character deaths you still haven’t gotten over?
