Through means of tutoring, I’ve had the privilege of meeting all sorts of individuals I arguably would not have otherwise, as I’ve mentioned before here on my blog. One individual, in particular, has inspired me so much as of late that I decided to write a post about them while simultaneously honouring their privacy.
I started working with this person a few months ago, and they initially approached me with my tutoring business to assist them in improving their everyday English conversation skills to boost their confidence. This person managed to teach themselves English in one year, and if that doesn’t impress you, buckle up.
This individual is one year older than I am, and they, very bravely, left their home country to come here to Canada completely alone. All of their family and loved ones are back in their home country, and they came here, not knowing a soul, in hopes of drastically changing the outcome of their life. They quit their successful job back home and immersed themselves in learning a trade here in Canada, and through conversation with them, it was revealed that I play rugby.
This person had never even heard of rugby as a sport prior to me mentioning it, and after showing them some videos and clips from games, they informed me they were curious to try it out for themselves. I told them that they’re welcome to come out to one of our practices, which they did that same week, and have continued to show up ever since.
The courage of this person, as well as their willingness to take risks and try new things, is nothing short of admirable. I am astounded by this person, and I can’t help but think that their bravery and willingness to try entirely foreign things have been one of the best lessons I have had the privilege of witnessing.
