My mom and I recently had a conversation about music that inspired today’s post idea. We were on our way home from church, following mass, and we were listening to a classic rock station on the radio in her vehicle. Whoever was working at this particular station while my mom and I were in her car was doing a damn fine job, because song after song we found ourselves turning the volume knob up a wee bit more and singing along.
My mom turned to me and said, “I could go without television and movies, but never without music,” and because I agree with her, I wanted to address just how damn important music is to all of us who understand its significance.
On a side note, if you ever meet someone who claims they don’t enjoy or listen to music, there is a strong probability they’re a psychopath, so hopefully your cardio is decent so you’re able to run as far as possible in the opposite direction of them.
I think perhaps that, as a collective whole, we take music for granted and aren’t necessarily always conscious of how important it is to so many of us. Music is so much more than sound – it is a means to feel, to forget, to remember, to grieve, to celebrate, to live, and so much more.
Talking about how powerful music is reminds me of the chorus from ABBA’s ‘Thank You for the Music.” It reads:
“So I say thank you for the music, the songs I’m singing
Thanks for all the joy they’re bringing
Who can live without it? I ask in all honesty
What would life be?
Without a song or a dance, what are we?
So I say thank you for the music, for giving it to me (.)”
Thank you, music, for all you do for us.
