Unless you’re the absolute definition of a hermit, you have likely caught wind of the fact that the film of the year, arguably, is playing in theatres. The Odyssey is making all sorts of waves in the movie realm, and for good reason – it’s an incredible flick.
My mom and I went to the theatre to see it together, but because the film is almost three hours in length, we opted for an earlier show to spare us from arriving back home at dawn.
I’ve seen mostly positive things about the movie so far, but I have also seen a handful of negative comments, and I’m rather surprised by them. I read a review today that claimed the movie is boring, and if that’s your takeaway after viewing this fucking masterpiece of a movie, then perhaps you aren’t able to distinguish a whole lot of excitement in your own life.
Is the movie long? Yes. Could it have been made to be a bit shorter? Probably, but I can’t think of one scene that wasn’t vital to the overall plot of the film.
I went into The Odyssey thinking it would depict a lot of battle scenes, but this film is so much bigger than a war movie. There’s actually only a handful of battle scenes, and the bulk of the film addresses Greek mythology and the wonderful sorts of creatures that existed in Odysseus’ time. Matt Damon as Odysseus delivers what I consider to be his best performance of all time, and Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and John Leguizamo are equally astounding and captivating in their performances.
There are definitely scenes that made me uncomfortable (cue the pig scene, my God), and while I’m not a film expert, I suspect this was Christopher Nolan’s intention. Go and see it and feast your eyes on a true visual wonder.
