Every morning for breakfast, along with my oatmeal and berries, I have a green smoothie to jump-start my metabolism for the day with a solid dose of veggies.
Understandably, a lot of people cringe at the idea of a blended vegetable smoothie, but they really can be quite tasty if made with the proper ingredients.
My sister is who I have to thank for getting me on the green smoothie bandwagon, actually. She is a committed vegetable smoothie drinker. Her smoothies are a little more potent in terms of vegetables than mine, but it’s all about personal preference.
Here is the recipe for my green smoothie:
Combine two cups of pure orange juice, two tablespoons of lemon juice, two cups of spinach, a banana and whatever fresh fruits you have on hand. I like to make mine with strawberries, blueberries and blackberries, but any fruit will work. Simply blend all ingredients together in a blender until you get a smooth consistency, and enjoy!
You can add ingredients to your smoothie to turn it into your entire meal. For example, my sister incorporates proteins like egg whites and flax seeds into her smoothies to make them more filling, but you can also add proteins like nut butters, chia seeds, or various protein powders. The juice base you choose is totally flexible, as well as the fruits and vegetables you use to create your own desired smoothie flavor. Kale acts as a great substitution for spinach, and if you’re feeling brave you can even add in other vegetables like carrots, cucumbers and celery. As for juices, feel free to experiment with apple juice, cranberry juice, or even tropical fruit juices like pineapple or guava.
Spices are also a great thing to add to green smoothies. Cinnamon, cumin and garlic are all great ingredients with health-boosting properties, and can be subtle enough in taste to enjoy in a smoothie.
Let me know if you give green smoothies a try!
