As I was listening to Shawn Mendes’ Mercy the other day, I realized that my knowledge regarding who the fine lad is as a person is lacking. I decided to do some research on Mr. Mendes, and I hope you enjoy reading about him.
Shawn was born in Toronto, Ontario, to Karen and Manuel Mendes. His mother is a real estate agent and his father is a businessman, specializing in selling bar and restaurant supplies in the city. Coming from Portuguese and English descent, Shawn and his younger sister, Aaliyah, were raised in Pickering, Ontario.
Shawn taught himself how to play the guitar via YouTube videos when he was thirteen years of age, and shortly after learning how to play, he began to post cover songs to Vine, gaining millions of views and followers in a short span of time. By August 2014, Shawn was the third most followed musician on the app. Andrew Gertler, an artist manager, came across Shawn in November 2013, and after bringing him to Island Records in January 2014 Shawn officially signed in May and released his first single, Life of the Party. His first single allowed him to become the youngest artist to debut in the top 25 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
In August 2017, Shawn became the first musician under the age of 20 to have three number one songs on Billboard’s Adult Pop Songs Chart (Treat You Better, Mercy, There’s Nothing Holding Me Back). He also signed with Wilhelmina Models in 2016, shortly after he announced his second world tour.
Shawn’s music is generally described as pop, and I quite enjoy his work. To me, he is an example of a success story that originated with humble beginnings, plus he’s Canadian. He is only 19 and he has achieved tremendous success already. Thus begs the question, what’s not to like?
