A few nights ago, Blaine and I decided to watch Mine 9 via Netflix. The trailer that played for it seemed interesting, and because neither of us is overly familiar with mining, we decided to give it a watch.
Mine 9 is based on true events and depicts the story of nine coal miners working in a mine in the Appalachian mountains in West Virginia, two miles underground. The conditions of this particular mine are poor and extremely dangerous, with the constant threat of excess water entering the mine and drowning the workers, as well as high levels of methane underground. The movie follows the journey of these men as a tremendous methane explosion has them fighting for their lives with only one hour of oxygen available to them.
Mine 9 stars Terry Serpico as Zeke, who I interpreted to be the foreman of this particular mine; Mark Ashworth as Kenny, Zeke’s brother; Drew Starkey as Ryan, Kenny’s son; Kevin Sizemore as Daniel; Clint James as John; and Erin Elizabeth Burns as Teresa. For me, Clint James as John really stands out in terms of performance, but the entire cast of this movie is very well suited.
I’m happy Blaine and I decided to tune into this movie because it was highly educating in terms of coal mining and the mining world as a whole. I knew mining is a dangerous job, but Mine 9 really put the incredulous danger of this job into perspective. I did a little bit of research about mining after watching the movie, and I’m glad I was able to gain a smidgen of insight into this profession.
This movie is entirely worth watching, and while I didn’t love the ending as I found it to be a bit rushed, it is a great movie overall. It powerfully displays the harsh realities miners face on a day-to-day basis on the job, and it serves as a means of remembrance for all miners who have lost their lives while working.
