Have you seen Netflix’s ‘Barbarians’?

I find it somewhat paradoxical that while I never enjoyed studying history when I was in school, I’ve always been very interested in certain periods throughout history. I’ve made mention that I’m quite intrigued in medieval history, and I’m also quite fascinated by the Vikings.

Netflix recently debuted its original series titled Barbarians, and you can probably guess that as soon as I watched the trailer I decided it was a must-watch for me, personally. I’m almost finished the first (and so far only) season, and I wanted to chat about this show with all of you.

Barbarians “is a 2020 German historical war drama television series created by Andreas Heckmann, Arne Nolting and Jan Martin Scharf and starring Laurence Rupp, Jeanne Goursaud and David Schütter. The series is a fictional account of the events leading up to the Battle of Teutoburg Forest during the Roman Empire‘s occupation of Germania,” the show’s Wikipedia page explains.

The series may be a fictitious depiction of what occurred in this period of time, but I would imagine that it is somewhat comparable to what may have taken place prior to the Battle of Teutoburg Forest while the Roman Empire had a heavy and violent presence in Germania. I’m no history buff, but my sister is, and she said how the show depicts this era in time is pretty accurate to what she studied while in university.

The show focuses on three main characters; Arminius/Ari, played by Rupp; Thusnelda, played by Goursaud; and Folkwin, played by Schütter. I think the acting in this show is truly phenomenal, specifically from these actors and actress, and the dynamic between the three of them is quite interesting.

I’m not going to give anything major away, but I will say that this show isn’t for the faint of heart. It is incredibly violent and gory, and it portrays and addresses very serious topics such as suicide. There is a fair bit of nudity as well.

Overall, I think this series is fantastic. I’m loving it, and I sincerely hope a second series is in the works.
