My nails and I have been on quite a journey together. A transitional one at that.
When I was younger, probably about ten or 11, I discovered the scrutinized habit commonly known as biting my nails. I didn’t just bite my nails; I chewed the skin surrounding my nails as well, and over time, my nails became roughly half of the size they should have been and my cuticles and nail beds were constantly chewed to hell.
I discovered later on, after I was formally diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, that skin chewing or picking, as delightful as that sounds, when it comes to fingernails, is extremely common. This knowledge didn’t really help my case, but it did provide some clarification as to why my fingers looked like they went through a wood chipper.
Then, randomly, I stopped biting my nails off. I still pick the skin around my nails to this day, but not to the extent I used to, and I am proud to sport my long nails now that I have them.
